Name of Author: DR. JEENO JAY C. FRANI Place: PHILIPPINES Title of the Book: A.D.E. in SPED (Asthma, Diabetes, and Epilepsy in Special Education)
What is this book all about?
This book is about Asthma, Diabetes, and Epilepsy in Special Education. Asthma, Diabetes, and Epilepsy are amongst the top three health impairments seen in children with special needs. The book is composed of three parts for each health impairment: (1) the disease itself, (2) caring for a child with, and (3) educating a child with.
Who are your target readers?
The author aims to educate teachers, whether regular or special education teachers and parents of children with special needs. This book could also help professionals and students in the allied health field familiarize themselves with the disease and how they can care for them.
What makes it different from the existing books in the market? The book was made easy for the general public to comprehend. The book's content includes techniques applied to day-to-day living and dealing with children with either of the three identified health impairments.
Please share your journey writing this book. Who has been your inspiration? My journey in special education is not that easy. I got curious with a cousin diagnosed with Severe Autism on how I could be of help caring and educating her and teaching her significant others on the different interventions they can do for the benefit and welfare of the child. My primary inspiration for this writing is my grandmother, who passed away when I was still young. Regrets, I have a few, but I know that whatever happens, she is happy for this achievement I offer to her.
How long did it take you to finish it?
The journey of writing the book is not that easy. It took me three years, three years of struggles, sleepless nights, and tears. But my determination is so high, and I look at my recipients as my source of inspiration for this. This book is an output of a study. Thousands of teachers participated in the research, and I chose hundreds of participants to test this study's output.
What do you hope your readers or your target community will get from reading your book?
I hope that the readers would find it beneficial for them if they have relatives who are children with special needs with either of the three health impairments or any relatives diagnosed with such diseases. I hope they would gain enough knowledge and background about what asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy are all about as a disease and how to care for and educate children and adults with the three identified health impairments. I envision this book to reach as many people as possible, not only here in the Philippines but also other countries in the world.
What are your future projects and endeavors?
After this project (and hoping for its success), I want to write another project about what to do before, during, and after a disaster—a book all about emergency and disaster nursing.
I invite you all, especially teachers- regular or SPED Teachers, as well as administrators, nursing students, and allied health professionals to read this book. And most importantly, guardians and parents who have children diagnosed with asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy buy this book, A.D.E. in SPED. The best practices I shared here in this book would be so helpful in caring for and educating children with the three health impairments.
